How To: Marketing To Twitter Users – Use Video

Thursday, May 27th, 2010 by Jonathan Volk

Twitter is one website that just really has not been a huge focus for many in terms of marketing. It’s understandable… Conversion rates coming from twitter traffic makes other traffic sources seem like super hero status in comparison.

It’s especially bad if you’re a direct response marketer – like many of you (myself included). Well finally… it’s been discovered that Twitter is actually the BEST at something… Getting users to watch video. (Yay, you can feel a little better twitter!)

A recent article on Mashable showed how Twitter is emerging as the online video power broker.

Essentially, the top referrer for most video sites is twitter… Not only that, when users are referred to a video from Twitter, they are more likely to watch it for a longer period of time.

Take a look at these charts [courtesy of Mashable]:

So what does this mean for you?
First, if you’re advertising to people on twitter, they’re probably used to the world of 140 characters. And… twitter is comprised of the more tech savy people.

All that to say, if you’re not using video on your landing page when promoting an offer or advertising on twitter, you’re probably missing out big time!

And, if you can fit that message into a two minute video… even better!

JUST the other day I saw @JacobSeaGall (VP of Marketing for my company) tweeted out a sponsored tweet CPC campaign from Lunchables that linked directly to a youtube video.

At first I was like… Dang… What a nice gig. Get paid for linking to a youtube video. Now that I know a bit more about twitter… you have to smile. Good move lunchables!

[ Getting the pizza lunchables in my lunch when I was a kid literally defined a great day for me. Now I realize... It was some flat bread with cold tomato sauce and cheese... but it didn't matter, they were awesome. ]

Conformity…
When you advertise on a traffic source such as twitter, it’s important to adapt your marketing methods to the way that will be best received by those users.

Here is a perfect case study example of how Shoemoney DOMINATED Digg years ago by changing his page up to better suit the traffic coming from digg.

Really interesting stuff…
