Is that the best you can do?

This is a very good question. The "power" in this question is two fold.

One, for yourself and two, for others.

See, asking yourself, "Is this the best I can do?" is a great way to motivate yourself to work that much harder, and strive that much more for excellence. If you're going to do something, why not do it with excellence.

More importantly and what I want to focus on in this post is the power that this question has for others.

When you are negotiating over something, be it a price, payout, offer rights, and other things, asking the other person, "Is this the best you can do?" can often be a very beneficial question for you to ask.

Many times by just asking, new opportunities and deals can open up to you. :)

That is a great point Jon. Right up there with asking that question is the power of “the long silent pause”. The longer the better. It can really make someone uncomfortable while negotiating to have a long silent pause.

  2. That question Jon can confuse so many people but at the same time make them think is it. If we all do work and think that our work would be GREAT!

    Thank you

  3. Jonathan,

I ask myself that question, multiple times during my workday, every day, as I try to learn and prosper at PPC.

My main challenge is sufficient daily click budget funds to run my ads for any meaningful length of time to test and refine their conversion rates and CTR.

Also learning how to target tightly focused market niches is a hillclimb.

Enjoyed this meaningful post, it is important to step back and answer this question as we extract ourselves from this financial quagmire the US is currently experiencing.

    Respectfully,

  4. A good question to ask as long as you don’t do it to the point you bring yourself down.

  5. That is a very good question to ask yourself. But asking it to others may be a bit too confusing in the end…

  6. Good little trick for negotiation although some people may not be as receptive to it as others. However, a very good question to ask yourself as you are working throughout the day.

Great question. I’m always trying to ask myself similar things. Thanks to that I’m always think that the life is awesome and I’m doing my best in it.

  8. It’s definitely an excellent question for both yourself and others. It’s something I consistently ask myself, though it does tend to lead to a perfectionist mentality, which can be equally as harmful as just accepting your performance!

I get asked the question a lot at work from clients, and it is pretty darn intimidating, that’s for sure. Fortunately, or unfortunately in certain circumstances, I have no lee-way and what I offer is the best I can do lol!

  9. That is a great point Jon. Good luck !

I don’t know if I’m doing the best that I can, but everytime I do something impressive, I amaze myself at what I can do

I never like the idea of settling for less. It could be for anything I do in life. From blog to girlfriends, I like to be picky, do my best, and never settle for less. This post makes me want to ask myself that question you quoted everyday.
