It's great that religious charities help so many people. It would just be nice if they didn't make religion such a big part of the help they are giving. Would they be helping all those people if it wasn't such a good opportunity to convince them to join their religion?

Brainwashing people- are you serious? Religious charities have been taking care of the poor and needy WAY before it became politically correct to do so. You need to move out of the dark ages....people go because they choose to go, not because they are brainwashed - just like you obviously choose not to go.

Props to you Johnathan. I'm a Christian as well and it's unfortunate that many people don't get what being a Christian is all about. Giving money in my opinion (no matter what amount) has nothing to do with someone "qualifying" as a good or bad Christian. It's about having faith in God and what he has done.

If you don't believe then I hope one day you will but I don't judge. That's God's job. There are a lot of Christian haters out there but also a lot of over-the-top bible pushers as well who that turn away non-Christians.

I have a lot of non-Christians friends and they should no more judge me for being a Christian than I should for them holding their own beliefs.

I also DO run some continuity programs. It depends on the offer. I curse and I love beer. I'm not proud of some of the offers I've run in the past but it doesn't disqualify me or anyone as a Christian. It doesn't work that way. There are no perfect Christians and being a Christian is a lot more than a word it's holding a belief.

Actually 10% is just tithe. I give offerings as well. It's all about your heart. Although the dollar amount I give is not relevant.

My pastor drives an old blue toyota truck, no radio, stick shift.
My youth pastor drives a Sabb. The front door's lock doesnt work, his windows no longer roll down (he had to duck tape them up at one point), etc.

The reason they don't have nicer cars? Because they themselves are dedicated to the cause and even though they have less income than a lot of people give way more on a percentage than most people.

If you think money could go to other causes and be a better usage you're wrong. Other charities charge administrational fees usually in the 10-20%. When I write a check out to an Indian orphanage and give it through my church for example, 100% of it goes directly to the orphanage.

I choose to give through my church because of that. :)

Lastly, it's not about feeling good. I can feel good just by going and kissing my wife. ;) It's about changing people's lives.

I do appreciate your points however!

Thanks,
JV

No, I was never hurt Jon. I'm actually pretty happy in my life. I'm just aware and observant and have seen a lot of things that bothered me when I have been dragged to various churches with friends or SO's in the past.

I'm just saying, you seem like too smart of a guy to fall into it all. And if you follow "gods rule of 10%" (one of the things that always bothered me...that's a CHURCH/business "rule". What happened to making donations on your own will rather than being told you have to give 10%?) then we can assume you are giving your churches 30k a month? That much money could go to more direct causes where you know the needy are getting most of it. Or better yet, with that amount you could start your own charity and give it out exactly as you feel is needed.

One question to help put my mind at ease...that harvest church you donated to...what kind of car does the pastor drive?

And just to be clear, none of this is meant to be a direct attack at you, Jon, or to offend you at all. You honestly do seem like a pretty good guy which is why it sucks to see you get milked like that. But then again, if it makes you feel good and such then I guess it is worth it right?

It's kind of the same way I feel bad for Tom Cruise...I'm sure it makes sense to him and makes him feel part of something important but doesn't he ever stop to think about it all?

You must have been hurt in the past because your perception of the church is way skewed. In most churches, pastors do not get an increase in salary based on how much the people put in the offering that week. It's set to a standard wage for the area they live in.

I always hate seeing what I assume are great people get sucked into the scams that are churches. Sure, they do offer a place to meet and network with other, usually decent, people and sometimes do good things. But there is no reason they can't do that stuff without the church and probably make even more impact on those they would like to help.

churches are one of the slickest business models ever invented. Low opperating cost, tons of easily trained customers and free money ordained by "god" (god suggest 10% because that's how he works) for the life of the customer.

One HUGE thing that has always bothered me...the pastor likes to suggest that worldly belongings are not important around the time the offering plate is going around. Then after the service he gets into his $90k Mercedes and goes home to his mini mansion. Let me put it like this, if the pastor is driving a nicer car than my parents have ever driven then there is some problem with peoples perception of what is going on at said church. Either the paster is making a killing with all the sheeple paying away 10%+ of their livelyhoods or they are already well off (some other scam?) and not practicing what they are preaching by living way beyond their earthly needs. Of course hypocrisy is a huge part of religion, especially those making profits off it, but it's always frustrating seeing decent people line up to drink the coolaid.

Jon you seem like a great guy and seem to legitimately care about people in general. And of course you must be smart and hard working to have gotten where you are today. It's just a shame that, despite that, you give credit for those personality traits to an imaginary figure and religion/chruch that profits off that blind following.
