I have those days occasionally, in fact, right now. I feel like doing nothing because of a headache, but I have a ton of work I need to do.

Ever have those days? I'm sure we all do. It can be especially hard when you work full time at home or you are the boss. Less accountability and pressure to get it done because you are the one setting the pace.

It's times like this when I really like to push myself and try to stay focused.

What has been working for me is:

  • Trying to change my environment. I will grab the laptop and go work downstairs on the couch instead of in my office. This is the best way for me to combat a case of the, "I dont want to work."
  • Grabbing a snack and a glass of water. A nice break is a way to give you that needed boost of energy.
  • Play a quick iphone game. I like to take a quick break at times to play a no thinking game on my phone. Sometimes it's nice to stop thinking and just relax for a minute.

Ok - So What do you do when you just don't feel like doing anything?

Out for a walk in this cases. really clears the mind of all the “i don’t wanna work” mind condition.

    Also, congrats. on your marriage.

  2. I know this way too well. For me, being a young entrepreneur, is the typical friends calling – “Hey dude, what ya doing – up for a beer or two?”, and me ending up being out all night on a week day… Well, sometimes I hate being my own boss ;-)

  3. casey says:

I’ll catch up on some blog reading, feed the fish on our lake or jump on facebook. It is good just to get away from the computer for a bit though.

  4. Kris Malena says:

Is it wrong to feel that way all the time?

  5. Tipjar says:

    Take a scoop of Jack3d :-)

  6. Mau Fournier says:

First I’ll try having a glass of water, being dehydrated can really bog you down.

I’ll also have a 20 minute nap, which sometimes helps (although I have to give myself another 10 minutes to really wake up)

But what almost always works for me is the old “Just show up” rule in sports. If I can force myself to work for 5 minutes, I’m hooked. Getting started is the hard part so keep the feelings out of the ‘getting started’ part and you’re golden.

  7. We all have days when we don’t want to work. Instead of trying to ignore that you don’t feel like working, recognize that it’s impossible to be at peak efficiency and performance every day and give yourself a break.

Good point. We can’t expect to stay completely efficient 24/7. Our bodies and minds occasionally need a break. If you ignore that need, you will just end up wearing yourself out. Then it becomes even harder to regain that motivation.

  8. Dan says:

Summer is awesome because you can go work in the garden under an umbrella with a nice cold drink =D

  9. Chris says:

I love going for a short 20 minute walk, it clears up your head.

    Any iPhone games you recommend?

  10. Many times I felt that why I am working! Means felling of not working!!

  11. MrCuz says:

Worse comes to Worst.. take a break for a few hours. In my case it’s either basketball, football or a round of Counter Strike.. lol

  12. Forest says:

When I don’t feel like working, I read your blog.

  13. AffPortal says:

I’ll break out my visual studio and get to relaxin’ with some nice VB.net…

    ahhhhh, that’s better.

  14. Bart5QE says:

Read Jonathan Volk (and other blogs online) is always a nice way to break up the day. Also, I have found that going to starbucks is excellent for me. The people are not a distraction and instead of toiling away at home alone – it is nice to have people around even if you are not talking to them. Plus, Starbucks has wifi. Otherwise, a walk around the block, facebook, etc.

  15. For me when I get lazy I either look and my bank/loan accounts and that usually works pretty good. Or I will go look at pictures of my dream boat.

  16. Back when I was working on my websites full time, I used to have those kind of days. For whatever reason I just couldn’t motivate myself to work. I would end up spending most of the day playing poker and watching tv. Now I’ve managed to get out of those habits and I’ve stayed much more productive.

  17. Ben says:

sometimes you just have to stop to take a break. alot of times i’ll be working for quite awhile and i’ll stop to go hiking or to workout. if i dont have that much time i’ll do a set of 50 pushups to get the blood flowing. sometimes you just need that little break to improve productivity.

  18. Ilya says:

Oh, there truly are those days :(
I’m blessed with living next to a big park, so I just go there for a walk. Clears my mind pretty well.

  19. Melvin says:

I do get out of my room, then grab the ball and dribble for 5 minutes.. Then it should get me back in my mood..

  20. used tires says:

Well this is an issue I have to deal with alot. As a college student… and also when I work on my websites. One of the best things to do.. is to stay productive.. and do something… even if it may be go do laundry.. or something that is not of an urgency, as long as you stay productive is what counts. But if all else fails usually if you just start it… you can get the momentum and continue to do it.

    Till then,

    Jean

I can just have those days where I just don’t feel like doing any work. Which can be really bad for me but with about an hour break and a walk with my dog – I soon get myself back on track and clear my head. I sometimes even come up with ideas whilst I am on my walk.

  22. I will actually take a step back and in Google Reader read about other peoples successes. I realize that it is possible to build on the little success i’ve had if I continue to work hard.

  23. Pretty much every day I don’t feel like working. Maybe if I was a professional golfer, but that ain’t gonna happen.

  24. I usually make a list and make the top three things easy to accomplish then I blow through those. It helps me feel like what I have to do is “all downhill from here.”

  25. I have felt many times like this where i just don’t want to work and want to go outside. But the thing i have made up in my mind that one should have to return where he was before, i mean at work place.

  26. Dan Lew says:

This is the beauty about working or not being a blogger, it doesn’t matter if you miss a post for a day or 2, you can make up for it a day or 2 later!

  27. Derek says:

Being one that is still in a cubicle, I will usually take advantage of the flexibility to work from home when I’m hitting the wall of motivation to continue the daily grind.

When I’m up late at night working on my side projects and hit the wall, I lean back in my chair and think about how badly I want to be out of that cubicle and doing this to support my family.

    Usually works for me.
