Reverse Your Thinking

Note: This post was inspired by Paul at UberAffiliate. He posted about Yahoo Buzz but I think it could be expanded a bit more.

Sometimes, we as affiliates get stuck in a rut thinking that there is only one way to build a campaigns.

Here is the most conventional way a campaign is built:

  • Find offer / Niche
  • Research and development
  • Build landing page / Get Keywords
  • Upload campaigns to Adwords, Yahoo, and Adcenter
  • Hope your keywords give you enough traffic and good conversions.

This is just a very BASIC layout of how many campaigns are built with a "traditional" affiliate.

But let's reverse our thinking for a moment here.

There are many tools online which provide you ways of finding hot trends. Google Trends, Yahoo Buzz, and even some ebay tools which might help you to determine trends in the search industry.

So... Let's think about this. What's the main part about making thousands of dollars per day? You need a TON of traffic!!!

So put two and two together. Using trends you can essentially find places where you can get loads of traffic with little competition.

Now, your only job is to find a CREATIVE way to convert that traffic into cold hard cash.

Good luck. :)

Interesting Jonathan, this is what Gauher has been trying to teach in his reverse alexa techniques isnt it.

Have to start cracking my brain now.

Hi Jonathan,
I am a very loyal reader of your blog :0 I have do have a question. If we manage to find certain trends in the market through yahoo buzz, froogle, magazine sites, how do we know if there’s an affiliate offer that is suitable for that particular trend ?

This is probably a much better way of thinking about things. Satisfying an existing demand has to be easier than creating demand for something your supplying.

Jonathan, I experienced good luck in this area when running a campaign involving the presidential candidates. MSN was giving me < $10 / day profit regularly, but when one of the candidates made the news (back in May/June, didn’t happen much), this jumped 8x (400% ROI).

Knowing what’s hot this morning, which will change tomorrow, how do you get keywords approved & appearing right away (Yahoo / MSN, not Google)? The lag is what kills me

very true, two sides of the same coin. Again as in the industry goes you do not know till you test.
So a little test is on the reverse way of thinking.

Thanks Jon

Nice I like it I’ll give it a shot on next offer run. Makes sense to me make offers with the volume already there

Makes complete business sense … I always advocate sales before purchasing which is what finding the traffic first effectively does.

You just have to be prepared to move very quickly because you never know how long you’ll be able to keep getting the traffic once you find it.

Hum. Can only be sure after a bit of testing. Have you tested it yet, Jonathan?
