Just last week Jacob and I were in the office and were working away. Then, up comes twitter as we both like to check during the day.
After a few minutes of viewing tweets, we noticed Blue M&Ms at the trending topics of twitter. We researched it out (instead of doing those annoying tweets of people asking why something is trending rather than actually looking through the trending tweets to see why... [for the win]). We then realized that CNN released a new report on the blue dye used in Blue M&Ms.
Although we have a lot of work to do, it's always fun to try something quick and new.
Perhaps we could ride this Blue craze out a bit to make some quick cash.
I purchased a blue M&M domain very quickly and threw it up on a test server.
We threw together a site that we had hoped to be an affiliate landing page linking to MyMMs.com, where you can buy a whole bag of Blue M&Ms.
Sadly... While I am a CJ.com publisher, MyMMs.com was a By manual approval only advertiser. Doh! First issue.
Instead of just throwing that 9 bucks I just spend on a domain away, I decided to just mark up the product a bit and then I would buy it and ship it directly to their door. Easy enough.
We then began to tweet about the site on twitter.
At the end of the day we made a grand total of... $-8.88 the cost of the domain + time spent.
We had a good laugh and in the end, it just didn't work out. We did not put a ton of effort into the site.
Surprisingly I learned something new from this experiment and that's the most important thing about trying new things. Always take something out of the failures you have. The more you try, the more you can fail and thus the more you can learn.
If you succeed 100% of the time, you're not trying hard enough!

Yeah the experience and learning from the experience is the biggest thing for sure. I know alot of my ventures haven’t always been successful, but each failure leads to new improvements to my future endeavors.
Till then,
Jean
Jonathan,
Great story– fail fast!
Or suck less faster.
lol! Funny story. I was expecting some ridiculous amount of $$$. Then I saw the “-” sign. Good stuff.
hey Jon I really enjoy the “failure” post.
IMHO, the readeres will learn more.
Keep ‘em coming!
Trying more and more is good but failure and learning session is combined with this and the most important thing as many times you try and get fail or succedd; you will defnitely learn something regarding it.
And sooner or later on of those quick ideas is going to bring in some big cash!
Well good thing it didn’t cost must except for wasted time.
I am ok to lose the $9 but the losing the time really stinks. You are right… at least you learned from this. And you shared it with us for our knowledge to.
Failure will always be a part of life. As I always say, its how you respond to them that determine your future.
By the way, the blue M&Ms looks pretty darn good… have you had any yet and do they taste any different then the normal ones? Random question…
