Real Life Demographic Targeting
Today I was at Ace Hardware picking up a screw because we had lost it during the move to the new offices.
While we walked into the store, I saw something that caught my eye.
Yup… That’s Kinder’s Barbecue sauce at Ace Hardware. It’s pretty epic once you think about it. Raichlen estimates that between 60-70% of grilling and barbecuing in the world is done by men. [Source]
Mix that with the demographics of Ace Hardware… 70%+ men and you have a perfect example of targeting demographics.
I know when I first got started in internet marketing, I was very black and white. If I was to promote a ringtone campaign, I would find every ringtone keyword I could. Simple right? But once I began to think about demographics… I started making good money. $300-$1000+ per day. How? I realized that those who liked ringtones generally searched for artists ringtones. So instead of just bidding on ringtone keywords, I would bid on artist names. Britney Spears, Eminem, etc.
Demographic targeting is where the big money is at. Once you know WHO wants the product you’re trying to sell, it’s not about keywords, URL targets, sales pages, or anything. It’s simply about getting your message in front of the perfect customer. In this case… “When you go home and grill ‘like normal’… you should try some of this really good BBQ sauce.”
