Kill (re)Bill – Yahoo Edition

killSo Rebill / Free trial offers have been all the rage recently in the affiliate "news" world. Yahoo was the final huge source that allowed them on their advertising network when done through a Media buy (Not the PPC side of things).

It's confirmed through multiple Yahoo Representatives that Yahoo! will be banning / removing advertisements from their CPM based advertisement system that have free in the ad and then lead to a rebill and possibly all rebill offers themselves. According to some news articles, this actually could result in a loss of around $75 million dollars for Yahoo. Crazy!

Yahoo Search Marketing has been killing rebill offers in their PPC network for a while, but has allowed them on their banner advertising network when done via large media buys.

A Media buy is usually a large purchase of advertising space ($10,000 is usually the minimum purchase - many are 6 figure contracts - $100,000+) paid on the per 1000 impressions of the ad.

Do you think that this will be the end of the rebill model? Nope. It will just be more difficult to promote offers in this way.

      I had heard a rumor about Yahoo’s impending rebill changes recently.

      That’s news to be sure, but I think the FTC is going to be coming down on rebill advertisers in a fairly serious way. Even that won’t get rid of rebills. It may just force them out of the USA, so we’ll just be sending more money overseas.

    2. I guess you’d expect to see a spike in grey/blackhat promotion of the offers if all the legit avenues are drying up.

      I agree, this whole “ban rebill” stuff is getting to be garbage. Its not our fault consumers won’t read things and then complain about it and make it seem like rebills are the worse thing in the world.

      None the less, it’ll just put more money in the pockets of other places. Can anyone say media buy/banner advertising on sites directly?

      I totally agree with Dustin.

      Hey customers – read the dang terms before you buy something. Have some personal responsibility please.

      If I lease a car and then go over on my alloted miles I don’t get to cry and complain about the fee – I PAY it because it was part of the terms.

      I’m an advertiser finalizing a legit continuity program and I’m having to go out of my way to ensure everything is clear because people whine to much.

      The problem isn’t the rebill. It’s advertising the free then having small print talking about how the membership will automatically rebill at a much higher rate within a short period of time (from only a few hours to several days) if it’s not cancelled. It’s deceptive billing practices like these that are ruining the market for the legitimate offers.

      At the moment, Yahoo does not seem to mind the rebill offers as much as Google. You still see them a lot more than you do in Google and they certainly won’t ban your account. At worst, Yahoo will simply delete the campaign from your account and send you a fairly mean letter asking you to not upload it again or face a ban.
