Be sure to apply to my favorite affiliate network, AzoogleAds.

For the longest time all you would hear about the content network was how you needed to disable it to make money. This has been going on since before I got started in pay per click stuff which goes back to 2004.

To be quite frank with you, Content network and content match are great places to make money if you can figure out how. I've seen more and more threads popping up of people using cheap clicks to get a profitable campaign with some pretty good stats. In fact a good friend of mine made over $8,000 profit from the content network alone. Not too bad eh?

So what are some ways to make money using the content network?

I think the most important thing to remember is that you need to treat it way differently than a search campaign! It's an entirely different ball of wax. As such, I strongly believe that you should not ever advertise both the content network and search network on one campaign. Use multiple campaigns.

There are multiple benefits to this including the ability to track your profitability much easier.

Content network campaigns are a bit like search campaigns in that they need to be fine tuned in order to be very effective. Thankfully Google has recently released a way to do this. You can now exclude sites from your content network results.

By using PHP referrer stats, you can really fine tune a campaign to make some extra income!

Next time someone tells you to turn content network off, just tell them ok and smile knowing that you'll probably make more money than them. ;)

I agree with you, Jonathan. The content network isn’t dead! It’s alive and breathing. You just have to play differently on it.

Another benefit of not running content and search on the same campaign is that the content network will significantly decrease your overall campaign/adgroup CTR.

I think one thing to point out is that it seems to be extremely successful in online marketing you need to be one step ahead of the others. All these people making money in content network did it when everyone else thought it sucked. I’m not saying that there is no money to make on the content network anymore, I’m just saying it will probably get harder. To me the trick to online marketing is finding that thing that works before everyone else even thinks of it as a possibility, which unfortunately I have not been able to do yet. Oh well back to brainstorming and I’m sure I’ll come up with a great idea at some point.

I’ve read this a lot lately, but its always the same thing. “you need to treat the content network differently from search”.

Ok..great. But uh..how? Example? Or is this top secret super affiliate stuff?

It’s dead.

I have been trying affiliate marketing for about 2 months now, and havn’t been able to make a profit unfortunately =( I set up a few content network campaigns yesterday and none of them are showing any impressions. Asking Google about it, they say the campaigns are in queue to be approved. I wish they would at least show you your campaign is pending approval, I have no way of knowing if its still in queue or if my bids are too low to get any traffic. Im working hard every day to try and make a profit, trying Adwords search & content network, Yahoo search marketing… getting nowhere. I dont know what the heck im doing wrong, I’ll just keep plugging away.. back to work!

LOL! Its not dead…you’ve heard every “super” affiliate marketers say this crap all the time : “think outside the box.”

I use to hate that phrase, because I can’t even barely think inside the box, let alone outside! But now I understand what they mean. There’s a particular way to run stuff on the content network…just not the way search network is done. You’d be surprised.

Here’s a tip: exclude myspace. They suck for conversions….

Karolis says 12th March @ 12:42

Yeah I wonder too how do you treat it differently? Different ad structure, different ads than in search?

Jeremy says 12th March @ 18:24

Hey Jon,

You’re right, content network is not dead. In fact, I have certain projects where all I use is the content network to save on costs.

Here’s one way I treat CN different than Search campaigns:

1. Ads - one thing that I’ve found works miracles on CTR is to set your ad up like it’s a testimonial.

EXAMPLE:

Cheap Hosting That Works?
I Get Huge Bandwidth And Space
For Less Than $10 Per Month!

or

Dude, This Is Awesome
400 Gigs Of Bandwidth And 99.9%
Uptime For Only $10 A Month!

Good luck everyone!

Whoever is using Content Network, can you guys please shut up? No need to Brag about how great CN is!

what? :D

Ok, read up on aj22’s “cat food formula” on digitalpoint…that ought to give you some ideas on the wacky content network.

$1000 Affiliate Experiment says 13th March @ 9:17

Yeah, the “cat food forumula” is great. except that:

” I guess I should clarify a bit: that formula is only 2% of everything. There are a couple of elements that account for 98% of what produces the conversion, which will remain for my eyes only.”

thats helpful.

rico says 13th March @ 10:11

if you narrow it down you can see that theres only a couple ways the formula could have worked. keep in mind that the content network is also a numbers game, the lower CPC you can get, the better.

aj22 says 14th March @ 21:43

Hey,

The cat food formula thing is only 2% of everything, but a little creative thinking can easily fill in the rest of the gap. Pick a niche, go out and find ads for that niche on Adsense blocks, see what they are doing — then do it completely differently.

Good post.
