How to Choose a Domain Name that Will Increase Traffic

Choosing a domain name is one of the most important website related decisions you will make when entering the world of affiliate marketing.
Before you rush out to register a new domain name, it is important to consider some basic factors that may affect the success of your site. By following a few simple strategies, you can learn how to choose a domain name that will increase traffic and make you more money.

Your Domain Name Should Match Your Website Name

While it may seem obvious, it is preferred to choose a domain name that is the same as your website name. Once users become familiar with the name of your site, they need to be able to quickly type in the address and find exactly what they want.

If your website and domain name differ, users might not be able to find your site. As you are choosing a name for your website, look for something that is simple and memorable. Utilize a free domain registry tool in order to determine the availability of the domain for that site name.

Use Your Target Keyword in Your Domain Name

One of the best ways to attract a great deal of traffic to your website is to achieve a high search ranking for specific search terms. In order to improve your results, choose a domain name that includes your target keyword. This may not always be easy, since many of the most obvious domain name choices may not be available. Spend some time brainstorming name ideas in order to come up with a solution that is appealing and optimized for search.

Keep Domain Names Short to Increase Website Traffic

Shorter domain names are not only memorable, they are also easier for users to spell. This simple fact alone can dramatically increase your website traffic. However, do not sacrifice memorability or branding in order to obtain the shortest possible domain name.

For example, if your website is called "Widgets Weekly," opt for a domain name such as WidgetsWeekly.com rather than a shortened variation like WidWeek.com. Consider user behavior as you try to find a balance between brevity and branding.

Choose a Creative Domain Name

While generic domain names remain popular, choosing a creative name can also help increase your site traffic. If your preferred domain name is not available, consider different options. For example, if the domain name WidgetsWeekly.com was already taken, you might consider alternatives such as WidgetsMagazine.com or WidgetsDigest.com. By exercising your creative muscles, you can find a domain name that will be a hit with potential readers.

While choosing a domain name can be difficult, the potential gain in website traffic and online visibility make the process well worth the extra effort. When it comes to choosing a domain name, always focus on potential choices that are short, memorable and that reflect your website goals. If your domain name doesn’t reflect the website goals your efforts in affiliate marketing might go to waist. Once you have chosen a domain name, register it immediately.

If you wait, you risk the chance of losing the name to someone else. Finally, include your chosen domain name on any professional communications and marketing materials to help promote your new website. By choosing a great domain name, you can significantly increase website traffic and promote business identity.

Great post on choosing domain names, I especially liked the last one because its not the conventional wisdom most people suggest getting keyword specific domain names, but leaving the be creative is a good touch to it. Also might be good tip to try to own all the .net, .org’s etc etc too if your planning on making it big. And similar variations.
