Ha, Ha, I couldn't agree with you more about WickedFire. Full of a bunch of spammers who think they know it all. Everyone in there is still saying, "I don't get twitter". LOL. Well if they stopped bitching about everyone else and actually tried to learn from someone else, they would get twitter.

From my experience, marketing yourself is allowed on DP. Lots and lots of people do that. Other forums aren't so forgiving though. We made the mistake of misunderstanding the rules at one forum and were immediately banned. A PM to the forum admin explaining the situation was ignored. Some forum admins rule with an iron fist and don't give second chances, so be sure that you familiarize yourself well with a forum, and not assume rules based on what you see others doing.

Hahaha.. nicely written :)
I do share the same opinion, I hate being marketed to. Most of the time, I keep saying to myself - marketers like these (those marketing to me) make me look good.. simply because of the horrible "pick up lines". Not to mention the fact that we spend thousands on advertising, and here's a guy trying to cut corners by spamming us.

I think many people have hit the nail on the head, marketing on an IM forum is like preaching to the choir. Most people, except for the poor newb to the forum who just posted their affiliate link, knows the tricks of the trade.

I think sometimes forum members go a little too far when chastising a person for doing this. Most of the time a flame war isn't necessary, just a simple PM stating that what they have done is inappropriate should do the trick. If the newb continues with the practice, then flame and ban away.

Yeah you are being marketed to all the time, every day most of us are being marketed to, but I think there are some less subtle marketing campaigns, like the ads we see on TV, are alot different than being pitched a vacation home in Florida for a Time-Share opportunity or something similar. I'd say we let our guard more down while watching TV, as opposed to l listening to a time share presentation.

Till then,

I agree with you Hannah. I definitely think it has something to do with the fact that we know exactly how all these schemes work. Most of those pitches are better suited to naive people who don't know any better.

Internet marketers probably deal with a lot more spam than the average internet user as well. To get our websites promoted, we often have to share our e-mail address, leading to a stream of spam e-mails. So we probably just get annoyed that we don't have a spam filter to avoid some of these other pitches.

We also have a better understanding of how many of these pitches are making exaggerated or false claims. So we fall for them less often.
