Learn the techniques I used to make over $4,000,000 in affiliate commissions! Check out my Free Affiliate Marketing Guide and learn the "how to" for Facebook Ads, PPC Affiliate Marketing, PPV / CPV Affiliate Marketing, And Media Buying!

One thing that I am learning to dislike more and more is how marketers (internet marketers especially) cannot stand being marketed to.

Take a look at wickedfire for example. You try to market anything and you'll be immediately banned, yelled at, etc. The funniest part is that there are some of the biggest affiliates, email spammers / marketers, etc there. Hahahaha...

It also seems to happen in other places like Forums.digitalpoint.com and other web master related forums.

I wonder why that is? Why do marketers hate being marketed to if they do it all day long?

You build an immunity to it after awhile and start to take everything that is being thrown at you as offensive. I dont think I would ever try to sell anything on Wickedfire, thos peeps will rip you to shred if you try to brag, let alone try to sell something to them. Would you get pissed off I bought advertising on your blog and used it to sell my aff products?

    2. Yeah you can’t goto them… You have to get them to come to you. That’s the best way to sell to marketers :)

    3. John says:

Probably because if you work at mcdonalds, the last thing you want for dinner is a burger.

I like receiving marketing. Why not? Swipe files come to me and I don’t have to hunt.

    4. AffPortal says:

I think it’s because there are so many badly rehashed products that are out dated and mostly just wrong being sold by people who are not really making money. It’s like that “affiliate cash machine” or whatever that simply encouraged you to forum market the very material you just purchased.. WTHeck is that all about?

    5. I experience the same thing sometimes on blogs. You get comments all upset about people using keywords for there names. Like everyone is promoting something on a make money blog.

    6. I get really annoyed – especially on twitter – when marketers spam out the same offers I’m already promoting via other means.

Guess what guys – I’m not buying!

    7. Hannah says:

It’s also just a superiority complex. I see it in “real-world” marketers all the time, too. If you sell something, you know the tricks and tactics, and you like to think you’re immune to the same tactics you use and can make your own decisions without being marketed to.

      • Cash Back says:

I agree with you Hannah. I definitely think it has something to do with the fact that we know exactly how all these schemes work. Most of those pitches are better suited to naive people who don’t know any better.

Internet marketers probably deal with a lot more spam than the average internet user as well. To get our websites promoted, we often have to share our e-mail address, leading to a stream of spam e-mails. So we probably just get annoyed that we don’t have a spam filter to avoid some of these other pitches.

We also have a better understanding of how many of these pitches are making exaggerated or false claims. So we fall for them less often.

    8. Nick says:

But but… if they don’t sell me the $7 ebook on how to market online how else will I make my thousands of dollars?

    9. Ian Fernando says:

cause we know how to scam ergh the marketing schemes work.

      • Yup you hit the nail on the head Ian, we are more skeptical ourselves because we are on the inside, and we know what works and what doesn’t, and it takes alot of trust for us to accept new ideas, and before we can open up to someone else pushing a product towards us.

It’s like being a race car driver, and someone trying to teach you how to drive better. Not sure if that’s the best example….

    10. Hoo Kang says:

      Excellent observation.

      Is this hypocritical?

      I dare say… yes?

    11. Doyle Lewis says:

The problem isn’t being advertised to. If you look in the Buy/Sell/Trade forums you’ll see plenty of threads that go well and get a lot of praise.

The problem is the people with no marketing skill and nothing to offer selling horrible services and old ideas.

    12. James says:

This is so relevant right now. I just posted something on abestweb.com and it got taken down as they thought my affiliate marketing meetup was mentioned by me to much. I got my account banned and when I asked about it they sent me an email saying “you are a spammer. I couldn’t believe it. We run a great meetup in chicago where I’m not pitching anything just trying to get the local community more connected but the spammers think I’m a spammer.

    13. Melvin says:

I agree. I think it also adds the fact that most marketers FAIL at doing their research on their target audience… I see a lot of people in dp yelling, loathing @ wickedfire for banning them (making fun of them) when all they tried doing is selling ebooks, huh! wtf

    14. Acemenace says:

Don’t try to con a con man.

    15. Yeah, that’s a bit hypocritical, isn’t it?

    16. Paul says:

At first I hated being marketed to when I got involved in marketing but now I am starting to be fine with it.

    17. If you want television, listen to the radio, or watch movies, you are being marketed to constantly.

      • used tires says:

Yeah you are being marketed to all the time, every day most of us are being marketed to, but I think there are some less subtle marketing campaigns, like the ads we see on TV, are alot different than being pitched a vacation home in Florida for a Time-Share opportunity or something similar. I’d say we let our guard more down while watching TV, as opposed to l listening to a time share presentation.

        Till then,

        Jean

    18. Bcarter says:

I think many people have hit the nail on the head, marketing on an IM forum is like preaching to the choir. Most people, except for the poor newb to the forum who just posted their affiliate link, knows the tricks of the trade.

I think sometimes forum members go a little too far when chastising a person for doing this. Most of the time a flame war isn’t necessary, just a simple PM stating that what they have done is inappropriate should do the trick. If the newb continues with the practice, then flame and ban away.

    19. Ben Pei says:

Lol one word says it all.

      Ego.

    20. 1WT says:

      Hahaha.. nicely written :)
I do share the same opinion, I hate being marketed to. Most of the time, I keep saying to myself – marketers like these (those marketing to me) make me look good.. simply because of the horrible “pick up lines”. Not to mention the fact that we spend thousands on advertising, and here’s a guy trying to cut corners by spamming us.

    21. From my experience, marketing yourself is allowed on DP. Lots and lots of people do that. Other forums aren’t so forgiving though. We made the mistake of misunderstanding the rules at one forum and were immediately banned. A PM to the forum admin explaining the situation was ignored. Some forum admins rule with an iron fist and don’t give second chances, so be sure that you familiarize yourself well with a forum, and not assume rules based on what you see others doing.

    22. ProTwit says:

Ha, Ha, I couldn’t agree with you more about WickedFire. Full of a bunch of spammers who think they know it all. Everyone in there is still saying, “I don’t get twitter”. LOL. Well if they stopped bitching about everyone else and actually tried to learn from someone else, they would get twitter.

yes, i am also a marketer and many times, i always encountering this kind of marketers. but in my opinion, we must accept that this is normal
