Ok guys, round two. For those who missed round 1, you can read the questions and answer here.

Feel free to ask me any question. I'll answer the best questions as best as I can.

I am going to be going to India for 10 days on February 14th and coming back on the 24th. (Yea, I'm leaving on Valentines day... my girlfriend was very excited to hear that... hahaha) This means that I'll be unable to attend Affiliate Summit West but I hope to attend some conferences this year a little bit later down the line.

What I'm going to do is post complete, detailed posts on each question during the days I'm gone and have them post dated so that I'll have new posts every day while I'm gone. I'll be able to read and interact with you guys still since my hotel in India will have internet access but I didn't want to have to write anything while I'm there. :)

Looking forward to hearing your questions! They can be about anything from internet marketing to personal.

Hi,

This is my first comment on your blog though I have been reading it regularly for the past 2-3 weeks.

So I have 2 questions for you:

- How did the experiment with the “Get rich quick schemes on DP” work, did you get payed?

- I am going to start affiliate marketing myself very soon (I’m looking to build a $1000+ budget first) and I wanted to ask you what niches are the most profitable and have a great conversion rate? Products from what niches are you generally promoting?

Thanks for the opportunity of addressing you direct questions! Have a nice trip to India,

Marian.

1. Tracking. How to track which keywords and/or Ads are converting? Any simple “do it yourself” solutions (without showing the real keywords in subids) ?
I know that for keyword tracking you will recomend your affiliate unleashed but is it hosted on your server or mine? Because all solutions like keyword/affiliate radar are hosted on their servers and it’s just doesn’t make sense to upload all sensible data on their server. If Affiliate Unleashed KW Tracking will be hosted on my server then what’s the price and features?

2. Out of the box keywords. Can you give us ideas how you find those non-related or a bit related “out of the box” keywords? You could use a niche that you are not promoting and tell us how you would approach that and what keywords you would try.

3. Keyword grouping. How do you group keywords when building new campaigns(how many kw in the adgroups, how close they are related and so on). Maybe you could also take a random niche and give examples.

Thanks for answers :)

Hey Jonathan,

I’m having some issues on how to scale a campaign. So I’d love it if you could tell us how you usually scale a campaign from 20$ a day to 100$ a day :)

Pryda says 24th January @ 5:13

Did you get paid yet by ProductReview and clixGalore?

Bill says 24th January @ 5:21

1) When you crossed your $3000/day mark on the 21st, what were your PPC costs?
2) Is your girlfriend Indian?
3) Why are you visiting India and what places are you going to visit?

Thank you.

Ron Carter says 24th January @ 7:16

I had some questions about PPC Cost and how much to start. Because of limited funds I have only done campaigns with 5-20 dollars a day. I know its small, but am I working with to little here. I have heard Amit Mehta say he started with $200 dollars a month and others “Supers” say save up a few thousand and do $100 a day to start. What esle do you do as far as SEO and Social Networking to get results at the beginning.

Wayne says 24th January @ 7:23

Hi,
I’ve been trying several PPC compaigns with no success - I sell some items, but my costs are more. Whilst looking at new offers, I always do some research via google etc, but I find that every offer seems to be covered already. Do you try and find offers that no one is running? or compete against players already there, or find keywords that arn’t being used? all of the above?
Its hard to find a way into this!

Ron Carter says 24th January @ 7:54

One more questions. On your last post about Google Slap, you mentioned redirects with keywords on the .httaccs file.
How many redirects can be in that file?

Tim says 24th January @ 7:59

How much time do you usually spend to launch a new campaign? What is the breakdown in terms of competition research, landing page creation, keyword research etc.?

How does a campaign “die out”? What does it mean to “maintain” a campaign every week or month?

Thank you

ClarkeW says 24th January @ 8:01

What is the most cost effective keyword tracking solution to track your conversions and keep them confidential as well?

Also, about how long do you spend on your initial landing page design for your campaigns?

Nick says 24th January @ 8:29

Jon,
You’re now bringing in a lot of money. For every $1000 that you earned this month, how much do you spend?

Also, how many offers / campaigns are you currently running?

Thanks!
Nick

Looks like you got your work cut out for you.. haha :)

Have fun on the trip.

Patrick says 24th January @ 15:58

How do you scale a campaign? If you are spending $.30 per click on Google and you get 20 clicks per day, how do you get 100 clicks for $0.30? Do you have to pay more per click to get the 100 clicks? If you have to pay more, doesn’t that eat into your profits.

Hello,

I saw some of your posts on Digitalforums and want to let you know how much I have appreciated your insights.

I have a critically important question and am hoping you can perhaps give some advice and share your thoughts.

The question is related to becoming an affiliate for someone else’s product(s.)

One of the main problems I see with becoming an affiliate is this: you can build a list and learn valuable skills while making a small amount of money selling someone else’s product / service. However, they make all of the money on the backend after you drive a customer into their marketing funnel. In most cases, the backend is where 99% of the profit is. I saw one study where the marketer made approx. $1k on the front-end info product and approx. 200K dripping on his customer list using offline methods (all of which were brought into his marketing funnel through the front-end product which was sold exclusively through affiliates.)

So my question is this: how can one be an affiliate for someone else and still get a percentage of the backend? Or is that lost forever? I realize that you can build a list and perhaps even offer some “exclusive” bonus to them related to the high-end products…

That said, is there a way (outside of emailing your own list directly with the higher ticket offer) to become an affiliate and make a percentage on future backend products sold directly by the company you initially referred the customer to?

I do realize that another alternative would be to only sell higher priced products and forget about the smaller front-end product.. but it seems that this strategy may prove difficult as it appears as if it would be difficult to sell a higher end product without building a long term relationship (via a list or otherwise) first. Also, if they are marketing the bigger products offline I cannot figure out how to make sure I am getting paid as there are no controls in place? Is this accurate?

Anyway, I realize that this is a bit long winded but any thoughts appreciated. My goal is 10K Net per month so I feel that I will need to earn a nice percentage on relatively high ticket items to reach this level.

Thanks in advance for your time. It is sincerely appreciated.

Scott

What is your method for keyword research? Do you use phrase, exact, or broad?

Also, do you have a landing page for all your campaigns? What kinds of campaigns offer do better with direct links, iframe, or re-direct?

Can you give a recommendation for someone to make landing pages?

Dezzy says 25th January @ 15:04

I am not sure if you covered this already..I will slap myself for you if you have..anyway.

Can static sites with content and affiliate links embedded in the content convert just as easliy as LPs do?

Thanks for answering.

With regards to Yahoo, how do you maintain 5/5 quality scores? Do you find that it’s a combination of very high CTR and a lot of impressions and clicks? In your screenshot you had a CTR of over 9%. That seems very high to keep over a long period of time. Is there a trick to get it so high besides split A/B testing? I’ve had a CTR even higher than this but it was an ad group with only a couple keywords. I’ve seen that even if you have a very high CTR if you don’t have a lot of traffic you won’t get 5 bars. Have you noticed a minimum CTR that you need to get 5 bars and a minimum amount of impressions per day? Approximately how many keywords do you keep in an ad group? Do you try to group them by three or four common words or you think two is enough?

With Google, about how many keywords do you put together in one ad group? Say, for instance, you group keywords having three common words but your list has 1000 keywords. Do you put this entire list into one ad group or break them up into smaller groups? If you put them into smaller groups, do you just separate them by just taking say 15 words at a time and making a new group or would you look for another common word?

Thanks very much for your insight!

Great blog. Why I did not see answer for all the questions posted? Did I miss anything?

Jonathan Volk says 29th January @ 20:39

Alfred: I’ll be answering them in February. :)

Thanks,
Jonathan

Andrew Fashion says 27th February @ 21:18

Hey Jonathan,

I just got into PPC/CPA stuff, really fun, and I guess the most difficult part seems to be the keyword research, using the right tools, and figuring out how to put everything together. Maybe you can write a good article on how you approach something, and maybe the tools you use :)

Thanks!
