No. There's a disadvantage in convenience and in the lack of control (geotargeting, cloaking, etc.).

Is there any SEO disadvantage to a php redirect? I know there are a lot of cloaking programs (which I will probably buy out of convenience once I have a little more money to spend), but I have just been using php redirects since they are free and easy to setup (although a little tedious).

Hey Blake,

The link cloaker is my other product http://www.wplinkengine.com – you get a "light" version of it (which is basically a super powerful PHP redirect). Basically, you can do things like discriminate links based on geographical location (like sending users from Canada to one destination and users from the US to another), based on IP address, based on referrer, and in the full version – based on which company owns the IP.

Think about that last one for a second. You could (and I have, and I have a lot of users doing exactly this) set it up to send anyone from Facebook Inc's IPs to a clean landing page and anyone else to your rebill. Or whatever else you can think of!

That theft protection is awesome. You could even bid less and let them pay for your marketing. Do you believe in Karma?

Seriously though, what is the advantage of using a link cloaking plugin like this vs. just using a php redirect. I'm new to all this, so I really like learning the mechanics of things.

I'm still skeptical about the value of plugins like this, so the details great.
