The other day Paul from Uberaffiliate.com wrote a good post that had some points I wanted to touch upon.
Affiliate marketing is a business where you will have very high, highs and very low, lows.
While you may have days where I might make $24,000 in a day, there are also still days where I only make a few thousand or a few hundred, quite a big difference. While making even a thousand in a day is a huge accomplishment to some, for my business, it's a low and can sometimes result in being in a bit of a low. A low for you is obviously going to be based upon your normal earnings but the feeling is the same none the less.
It's important to remember that these type of days are inevitable. At first, it was a big adjustment for me to learn to not be so swayed by days that may be a bit sub par. Sometimes you can feel a bit depressed or feel like your business just isn't doing all that well. But again, feeling bad for yourself or sad about these days will do nothing for you.
But now the other side of the equation: The good days.
The good days can produce the most amazing feeling ever. It's on these days that you have to be careful not to think about a months revenue at your current rate and making estimates for that month. For example, if you have a good day and make $20,000 and now think that you're going to be making $600,000 / month... It simply does not work that way sadly.
It's taken a lot of effort actually to learn not to allow these type of days affect me as much with the obvious major emphasis on the low days.
As a side note, I'm not writing this post because I am having a slow month... this month has been great for me.

I know the feeling, when I have low days I feel like my campaign is about to die and start panicing about what I’m going to do. Chances are that the very next day is back to normal or even a new record
It’s funny how things turn out, but like you said you just need to get into the mindset where it doesnt affect how you operate your business.
Yea exactly. Thanks for the good comment.
Jon,
It’s revealing to read that small affiliates like myself go through the same ups and downs. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and being honest.

i agree a lot on this post and with paul – there are days where I am low and days where I am high – there are some days where I am even in the negatives. but hey that is our industry. people think that we just make money but we too have our up and downs as a business!
Yea… Negative days as especially the worst. My worst negative day was -$4000! Hahaha! Ouch
Hey Jon,
i suppose alot of us affiliates big or small can understand that feeling completely…
We have to accept it and understand that this might be a bad day… on a side note… do not change your adwords or delete keywords just because its a bad day…
Rather, i choose to compare it over a weekly basis before i delete any keywords that’s obviously not converting…
Great advice. Thanks Ivan.
True. It took about a year to finally shrug off most of these ups and downs. Still can be a downer when you have a string of low days
Great post.
It’s kinds cool to know that there are a lot of us that have our good days and bad days online.
The bad days can be kind of rough, and it’s hard to stay in a positive mindset when they arise, but a good day can really lift things.
Your article kind of sums up the life of an internet marketer making money online.
I think my ratio of bad to good is too high
That can change with time…
It took me 2 years to get the ratio I have now!
Thanks for the encouragement Jonathan – been in a bit of a funk testing a bunch of new offers and trying to scale existing so this month has been less than spectacular. Tomorrow is another day, though.
Yea – you’ll get it.
Daily internet demographics I think play a big role as well. Depending on the type of message your trying to send out for which day. When I find I’m personally having a low day I put out a few new articles/forum posts and sure enough the next 2-3 days I can clearly see increases. Thx for the post!
Yea… good point for sure.
For example, weekends for me have always just been lower days…
Everything has ups and downs, our attitude to them makes a difference
Our attitude to wait for better days
I’ve read a few books on this, but I didn’t know that a few months later I would find out exactly the same; just in a few sentences:) Thanks
As with anything, you should expect ups and downs. Affiliate marketing though definitely isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s definitely important not to let the bad days get you in a rut, but rather to learn from them. I’ve yet to try affiliate marketing yet. I’m tempted though, but I know I just don’t have the focus with so much going on in my life.
In regard to one of your responses though Jonathan, I think weekends tend to be lower all across the board on the web. I generally find that I have about 25% less visitors on the weekends.
Good to know. Thanks for sharing that stats.
Wow, you have bad days where you only make a few thousand?
Man I’m living in a different world to you.
Although I do know the feeling of getting up and checking my stats, and seeing that they’re way down on where they’d usually be,
I get that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach….
Yea – the sinking feeling… I hate that.
I’m there with you on that sinking feeling. Kinda SUCKS doesn’t it !
Bring back the good ol days of Adsense. I say.
However, isn’t it nice to know that we all go through the the same thing – meaning you’re not alone – been there done that – bought the book and the T-shirt..
I think that you really do have to keep positive otherwise, you can really get sucked into a black hole, where one disappointment adds onto the next and the next and then you find that no matter what you do, you just don’t seem to be able to win.
Take time to refocus. Focus on something that you think will make the biggest difference to your business, like “cracking Adwords”, or “a way to find the best converting offers”, whatever, then focus on that one thing and find a way to do it.
There are a lot of ups and down in affiliate marketing, but when you start with good support, and the right frame of mind, you can make a lot of money. You have to be persistent. And later, when you start making money, you can buy the tools to make your work easier!
