Yesterday I had Lasik Eye Surgery.

Let me start off by saying it's probably one of the best things I have ever done in my life!

Let me describe the process...

First, I made an appointment online for a local Lasik eye Surgery place. My sister had the same surgery before so I knew a bit about it. This initial appointment is to check your eyes to see if you qualify for Lasik. I'd be willing to bet that MOST people qualify these days.

After that appointment, you setup another appointment for the actual surgery.

I had mine yesterday. I went in around 10:30 AM and waited till about 11:30 AM. I went in and roughly 7 minutes later, I came back out with a brand new set of eyes.

The Lasik process itself was a bit uncomfortable but not painful. They put a load of eye numbing drops and other drops. They used a laser to create a flap in my lens and peeled it back. Once they peeled it back everything went blurry. It was strange!

Next they positioned the laser over my eye. I was nervous at first that if I moved my eye it would screw up but actually the computer tracks normal eye movements which I thought was pretty neat.

After about 10-15 seconds of zapping (which I couldn't feel but I could smell [gross]) I was done for that eye and they repeated the process for the other.

I went back in today for a follow up exam and it turns out I now have 20/20 vision. :)

The cool thing about Lasik is that most places offer a 24 month financing program which has 0% interest.

This way, even the very best procedure (which is what I got), only costs about $150 a month. The top of the line procedure cost $1999 an eye but I got 10% off for making an appointment on the same day as my free consultation.

Most people won't need the top of the line package so you can expect to pay anywhere from $899 an eye up to around $1500 an eye. Really, if you factor in the cost of glasses and contacts over a lifetime... it's a good investment.

If your eyes ever change or have issues, you can go back in and they have a lifetime program where they will fix your eyes for no extra cost!

Pretty impressive eh? I love it. :)

How long did it take to heal? I’ve been curious about it but don’t want too much discomfort.

  2. Hey Matt! It took 24 hours of no reading, no tv, no computer. After that, I cant swim for a week… I can’t play sports for a week, etc.

Its actually not bad considering what you get. :)

I also put drops in my eyes every (awake) hour… Still nothing too terrible.

  3. superman says:

Did I read that right… you financed? Aren’t you making over 100k a month?

  4. Why would you not finance? It builds credit history and it costs me nothing… Hahaha.

I could pay for it outright sure but in the end it makes more sense to finance it.

When given the chance I will ALWAYS leverage my money.

Same thing goes with my car. Although I have enough to buy it outright, I financed it because it builds credit history and costs me practically nothing to leverage that money.

With the extra $20,000 I would have paid I can leverage that money to earn interest in stocks, invest it into other things and earn much more than if I had just paid it off in full.

The rich get richer by leverage… not by spending. ;)

  6. Zac Johnson says:

That is awesome, I need get that done!

  7. Greg says:

what was your vision before the surgery?

  8. dave says:

Sounds expensive, I thought it would have been a lot cheaper in the US. In Ireland, It now costs about €400 (less than $600) an eye.
A few years back when it was €1000 an eye here in Ireland, I went to France with my girlfriend where she had it done for 1k on both eyes, so the savings paid for a fantastic holiday and some change left over.
Thankfully my eye site is fine so I never needed it, but I went into surgery with her & I know what you mean by the smell…pretty rotten & not something you want to experience often.
I’m pretty squeamish & didn’t know what to expect but was fine till I saw that the system he was using was working on Windows NT4… & it crashed with the blue screen of death 3 minutes through…I was freaked to bits but didn’t mention it to the GF at the time, no point in worrying her, but thankfully it all worked out well & no glasses needed ever since.

  9. DamnSmiley says:

hmmm thats funny, i wont wanna play with my eyes anyhows. By the way Jon where is some pictures? And Zac your blog kinda takes too much time to load on my end these days i wonder!

  10. @Greg: My vision was -5.25 and -5.0 which is pretty bad.

@Dave: Again, I got the highest end one they offered. Apparently it can be as cheap as $500 an eye which is pretty awesome. LOL @ your story. That’s hilarious.

  11. dave says:

Jonathon, It is funny now to look back at it, but at the time for a squeamish bloke in a situation I didn’t want to be in, looking a a blue screen of death, smelling burning eye, with a doctor speaking a language I don’t know, I can tell you it was the last place on earth I wanted to be in… However, even after that experience, my daughter now wears glasses and as soon as she is of age, I’ll recommend it to her but hopefully NT4 will be well gone by then…

  12. Shawn says:

That sounds like it went well then, I could possibly see myself getting that surgery further in my life. I wear glasses right now and I’m too cheap to even think about getting contacts so my vision is probably declining but this surgery doesn’t sound too bad.

  13. Buddy says:

Oh man, I can not wait until I can get my eyes done. I think my contacts are -5.75 for each eye. They have gotten worse and worse over the years. I can’t see ANYTHING without contacts. When I mean anything, I mean nothing at all. Too bad I have to wait until I’m 25. I know someone that got it, they said its about $4000 for both eyes. It was $5000, but since she was going at the end of the year, they took $1000 off. I think they always give you some sort of discount. Ive been saving up for awhile now. Ive got my money, now I have to wait until I’m 25.

  14. Why do you need to wait till you’re 25?

  15. Marko says:

I think my vision is -1.0 and -1.25. I’m not sure if it would even be worth it for me. This would make a great Christmas present for my mom who wears glasses non stop….

  16. Marko: For your vision I think it would only cost a few hundred per eye so it might still be worth it to you…

  17. Garrett says:

Dude.. thats awesome! Congrats on not being blind anymore!

Did you have to wear the funny Goggles for 24 hours after the procedure? ( I know cuz my dad had Lasik a couple years ago). lol

  18. Buddy says:

I have to wait because the doctors say thats when your eyes stop growing or something. They said its safer too or something.

  19. Andreas says:

Congratulations Jonathan! I also had a lasik eye surgery 4 years ago. My dad actually videotaped it so I had a change to actually watch the procedure the next day. Although it was a weired it was NOT painfully as it seems! I can see very well and I am happy that I have done it although I am not 100% happy. Sometimes in the night I feel that I need to put my glasses on. Did you know that we have raised the changes to have farsightedness sooner than the usual age of 50 years old?

  20. Ughh… I’ve seen videos on Youtube of the procedure. I want to get my vision corrected still, but after seeing what they do, I’m pretty freaked out… I’m only 16 right now though, so I’d have to wait till im 18 or 21 (don’t remember, it’s the age they say your eyes are done developing)

  21. Joe says:

You were not scared? I mean, it’s your eyes. You weren’t thinking “what if something goes wrong.”?

  22. Danny Cooper says:

I hate touching my eyes, I can’t even try contact lenses so I doubt I’ll be using this service.

  23. Yeah man, weren’t u like a little scared (although it’s like 99.99% chance, right?)

  24. Dustin says:

Nice job… I recently went to the eye doctor for a yearly check up around a week ago. I got 20/25 vision but figured I would ask them about the Lasik procedure since apparently one eye isn’t as strong as the other.

In either case, the eye doctor told me in her own opinion, I’m just BARELY on the border line of needing glasses (for reading ONLY) – in any manner, I was NOT a candidate for Lasik surgery, simply because its designed for those who have a hard time seeing at any point of time.

    Bottom line, nice job :)

  25. perdere peso says:

    Congrats Jon,

I heard about this laser eye operation on my local radio station sometime ago.

Never thought it’d be this expensive.

The cost per eye is funny, do they actually think i’ll do one eye and leave the other :-)

  26. Wes Mahler says:

Ah gross post jon lol, makes me feel sick, ” could smell my eyes” eeee!!

  27. Wes Mahler says:

    But 20/20 yeah!!! nice man!

  28. Downloadic says:

My eyes are 2.20 miyop, but I prefer to use contact-Lenses

  29. Dating says:

Lasik is where it is at. My mom had night blindness among other issues and lasik totally helped her out. I am a big fan of this surgery and I think the recovery time is minimal.

  30. Lasik eye surgery probably is better. I really do hate wearing contacts.

  31. Yiannis says:

I am studying medical now . i know Lasik eye surgery is the best way to fix your eyes and really hurt your eyes. you can’t do 2 times on your eyes,it will make your eyes blind.
