Fail, Fail, Fail

Part of life is failing and I probably am an expert at it.

One of the main reasons why I am successful today is because I have failed enough times to know what to NOT do.

So often people start trying to make money online in a few weeks and tell me how they are frustrated because they can't get anything to work.

Failing since 2004

Let me put things into perspective for you. I have been working at making an income online since 2004. It wasn't until 2007 that I earned enough to make it full time. It wasn't until 2008 that I made enough for me to feel comfortable. It's now half way through 2009, 5 years later.

During the 5 years, I tried everything I could possibly try.

Edison failed over 1000 times before he created the lightbulb. Those failures are what defined his success.

You will never fail if...

You will never fail if... you never try. The bigger the risks you take, the bigger the success you're going to have. Plain and simple.

I know of numerous people who want to be full time internet marketers but don't want to risk PPC Money, advertising money, etc. Essentially they want no risk, and 100% reward. The times this happens are very few and far between.

Minimize Risk

There are a ton of ways to minimize risk in this game especially. When I was first starting affiliate marketing, I had very little reliable sources, which is one of the main reasons why I created this blog.

Now there are a TON of great resources out which I recommend to everyone who asks me. The hilarious part is that many people still do not take my advice because the resources usually cost something. Again, it's better that way because if you're not willing to risk $40 bucks a month for a training program, then you're not going to be willing to risk $1000 on PPC.

Resources to help Minimize Risk

If you're looking to start in affiliate marketing, the best place you can go to in my honest opinion, is PPC Coach. You can read my full review of PPC Coach.

Another great place is Affiliate Summit. Networking in person with people is a great way to learn new tricks, tips and overall gain a ton of valuable information.

So there you have it. Now go fail!

I once read this quote somewhere but i dont remember who said it.This is the quote :
“you have not failed.you have just found another way that does not work”
    how optimistic isnt it ?

  3. I agree 100%, failing isn’t always a bad thing either because recently I had a good month (personal best) – the following month the campaign died out and profits were really reduced. However during the “bad” month for me I learnt much more than I did in any other month so far.

Based on that knowledge I managed to get it back up and running stronger than before and finally beoke the $5,000/day barrier :)

Going for the 5 figure/day this month too which I’m feeling fairly confident about now

  4. The PPC click game seems confusing at first, heck, I failed over a dozen times. It’s all about test, test, and then test. Some people are scared of loosing money. What I do is cut back on rich tasting food and spend it on my campaigns.

  5. Don’t dwell on failing at any particualr campaign / niche in affiliate marketing or internet marketing in general.

    Pick up, move on.

Besides, we all know you are not a failure.

    Hey Jonathan.

I found your blog yesterday and started reading from the 2007 posts. It got me motivated to start making moves…I started a personal blog yesterday to log my progress, set some goals, and launched my first ppc campaign.

My budget isn’t much – only a couple hundred dollars and a $100 adwords voucher. It’s a little nerve wracking, but also a thrill.

Thank you for keeping it real and for the links to some great resources.

Yes failing is surely a part of nearly any business. Jonathan I too have been trying to get my websites going since 2004. They started out well and I worked from home for a year. Eventually my motivation and the income dried up. So I was forced to get another daytime job. Just recently I decided to give my websites another go. This time around I know a lot of mistakes that I have to avoid.

I hope you realize you’re lucky to have learned this lesson at a young age.

I don’t know of any successful entrepreneurs who haven’t taken a few chances and failed before jump starting their careers. It’s all about taking smart chances.

Everyone fails at one point, in their lifetime whether it is a small failure or a big failure, but it is important to learn from those failures and that is what makes us stronger, and better. I have seen many cases of people who had been earning 500,000 a year and then all of the sudden they made a mistake and lost it all, but they learned from their mistake and came back even stronger, and are now earning even more. Those who can capitalize the best on their failures are certainly in a good position.

    Till then,

    Jean

  11. Failing is awesome. I wish I failed more often so I learned more.

  12. There are no failures in life, only lessons to learn from and these lessons will help us grow and become even better.

Failing at affiliate marketing is easy to do. I have been wondering if there is even any room for newbie to make a lot of money.

    • John says:

      Hey Paul.

The way I look at it…everyone takes on the same risk. A super affiliate can fail as much as a newbie, if not more (which I think is the message of this blog post).

Once accepted into networks, we all have access to the same tools and all keywords are fair game. The only difference is that newbies (like me) have a lot to learn, and we don’t learn unless we try.

After trying to explain to my gf (who uses the internet all the time) about PPC and affiliate marketing, she was LOST. I get the same reaction from my dad and sister who are both active on the net.

This tells me that there are still people out there who will eat up affiliate offers.

Anything worthwhile that I’ve done took a lot more work than I expected. If I had known how much work it would have taken beforehand, I might not have tried.

This may be delusional belief, but I’m going to believe it works and go at it.

If you’re new, too, Paul…lets hang up the excuses together and make things happen. I just started a couple days ago and I’m pumped.

      -John

PS. Jonathan, I signed up to PPC-Coach! And I lost sleep because of it. I watched their videos till 6am and got 2 hours of shut eye before work… =)

  16. Yeap when I first lost $1,000 i thought I failed..and not long after some hardwork i got back $10,000. Thats the trick!

  17. Jonathan,

I feel much better now. I have only been failing since September of 2008. I’m comforted by the fact that I only have to fail for four more years before I get it right…! My digital video production company will pay the bills while I experiment with CPA / PPC campaigns. This is one tough industry to fathom…

  18. Ben says:

trying things, making mistakes but most importantly learning from your mistakes is the key to success in anything you do that challenges you. it seems like anything worth doing will be hard. you have to be persistent in achieving your goals. great post jonathan.

  19. The Edison quote: Edison failed over 1000 times before he created the light bulb. Those failures are what defined his success is definitely an important one that I am sure many people have heard before. Its definitely true that if you do not take risks, succeeding will be very difficult!

    Jonathan,

Do you think Affiliate Summit makes sense for an absolute newbie? Or would it be a waste?

    Thanks for any reply.
