Recently I started working on another new facebook campaign. It reminded me the troubles that can often come when trying to setup a new facebook campaign so I thought I would share some thoughts on that.

This new facebook campaign was a niche I never really had much experience in before so naturally I needed to do some research.

Since facebook ads is nothing like search engine PPC, it took me a while to learn how to research niches in ways that are different than my PPC campaign research methods.

With facebook ads, users are actively engaged in a website and it’s your job to distract them in order to click on your ads and complete the offer. With search engines, it’s different because users are actively seeking out something.

So the way that you research facebook ads is by finding what age groups, sex, etc (aka demographics) are going to be most interested in the offer you have. You do demographic research.

The best way to do this research is by finding out who is already visiting the page that you are wanting to advertise.

Quantcast

Quantcast is a cool service that will help you to get a rough idea of what demographics to start targeting. If you simply plug your offer page (the page your affiliate link goes to) into quantcast, you will be able to get a rough idea of where to start.

Sometimes the advertisers page will not have enough data to be able to give you quantcast information. In this case, try entering another more popular website in the same niche.

Affiliate Managers

Another thing you can do to get your facebook ads campaign started is to ask your affiliate manager if they know what demographic normally converts for this particular offer.

I find that affiliate managers often gravitate towards specific niches. If the affiliate manager knows this niche a bit better, they might be able to provide some helpful insight to get you started.

Other things…

The other things to think about are the little details. This is where it is ok to be stereotypical in some cases. Think about what the demographic you are targeting might like as a whole and target that using keywords, workgroups, etc.
