Learn the techniques I used to make over $4,000,000 in affiliate commissions! Check out my Free Affiliate Marketing Guide and learn the "how to" for Facebook Ads, PPC Affiliate Marketing, PPV / CPV Affiliate Marketing, And Media Buying!
Recently I started working on another new facebook campaign. It reminded me the troubles that can often come when trying to setup a new facebook campaign so I thought I would share some thoughts on that.
This new facebook campaign was a niche I never really had much experience in before so naturally I needed to do some research.
Since facebook ads is nothing like search engine PPC, it took me a while to learn how to research niches in ways that are different than my PPC campaign research methods.
With facebook ads, users are actively engaged in a website and it's your job to distract them in order to click on your ads and complete the offer. With search engines, it's different because users are actively seeking out something.
So the way that you research facebook ads is by finding what age groups, sex, etc (aka demographics) are going to be most interested in the offer you have. You do demographic research.
The best way to do this research is by finding out who is already visiting the page that you are wanting to advertise.
Quantcast
Quantcast is a cool service that will help you to get a rough idea of what demographics to start targeting. If you simply plug your offer page (the page your affiliate link goes to) into quantcast, you will be able to get a rough idea of where to start.
Sometimes the advertisers page will not have enough data to be able to give you quantcast information. In this case, try entering another more popular website in the same niche.
Affiliate Managers
Another thing you can do to get your facebook ads campaign started is to ask your affiliate manager if they know what demographic normally converts for this particular offer.
I find that affiliate managers often gravitate towards specific niches. If the affiliate manager knows this niche a bit better, they might be able to provide some helpful insight to get you started.
Other things...
The other things to think about are the little details. This is where it is ok to be stereotypical in some cases. Think about what the demographic you are targeting might like as a whole and target that using keywords, workgroups, etc.

QuantCast is confusing to use =/
I also like to use Google AdPlanner and Alexa to verify the results of Quantcast. That way you have a bit more confidence in choosing the right demographic.
FB’s reporting is indispensable as well…
Good point! It’s great to see some solid Facebook info for newbies. Thanks for sharing. Quantcast is such a valuable tool. Once you start your campaign, I also create different ads for each age group & demographic. The results of that split-testing will give you a ton of information too.
I think Quantcast is a highly valuable tool to use. I actually use that which is on my PPC Bully Toolbar. Thanks to Facebook advertising, it’s all about researching the Demographics which I can really pin point.
I’d never heard of Quantcast so this post has come in helpful. I’m thinking about advertising on facebook soon. One thing that this has shown me is to do your research properly.
I cant say anything more… This is the most crucial part here: “The best way to do this research is by finding out who is already visiting the page that you are wanting to advertise.” In all forms of marketing strategies, knowing your target market has always been, and must always be the first step.
I use a variety of tools for my market research, Quantcast being one of them. If you use the CashKeywords toolbar (www.cashkeywords.com) you can get easy access to them. This toolbar is so good, that PPC Bully copied theirs from it. But the CashKeywords toolbar does a bit more in my opinion.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll check it out.
This information provided by Facebook really needs to be enhanced to make the choice a bit easier as well.
The data you get from setting up facebook ads and the results should also help improve your search engine ads.
For instance a few years ago I had a site which asked the visitors to friend me on myspace. It gave me tremendous information about what kind of demographics visited my site and I could target my ads the that.
Good list.i think create different ads for each age group & demographic. Thanks for sharing a nice post.
I think this is going to be very helpful for me at least coz it can help me out for facebook advertising which i have been trying to do for long time. Thanks for the post.
Great tips! Thanks for sharing.
Love the tip about leveraging your affiliate manager. At all of the companies I’ve worked at, the affiliate manager only looks good if your campaigns do well. At on of my companies, it was not uncommon for the affiliate manager to spend half hour-one hour per day on the phone with top affiliates. Another tip: Ask your affiliate manager what’s working for the company’s internal PPC/marketing team.
I am really surprised that so many people are saying that Quantcast is a good research tool. In my experience, Quantcast stats are so far from the truth. Even when I installed the quantcast code on some of my websites, they still produced horrible stats. Then there is the issue of where they even get data like age & sex. Most of the time they simply would not know. So the stats are all complete guesses.
Some really good tips and i also believe that quantcast is a very helpful tool for understanding your target audience.
Dude, for a site that specializes in useless posts, this is an exceptionally useless entry.
Even as a generic post, something designed to get your useless newbie readers up and going with Facebook, it is epic fail.
Hey Larry the Lobster. Sorry man… I forgot that this website was specifically written for you and that newbies and the many (many) people more advanced than you need not have posts they can read.
I’ll make sure to address all future posts towards you.
Oh wait…
Thanks for this – I am just gearing up for another Fb campaign and already have some ideas based on your post!
I will remain to use Google adwords as my main advertising campaign to promote e product , it is more easy to targeted keyword., if facebook ads is more diffcult to me to targeted the niche, it must take a lot of research to make sure the sales and tageted traffic to convert into a sales.
I haven’t dabbled much with facebook ads, but at one stage or the other I will undoubtedly be getting my feet wet, and posts such as these will really help me to make informed decisions.
Hey Larry

Jon.
I’ve noticed some discrepancies between Google Ad Planner & Quantcast.
Any insight on this or what source I should lean to?
Why do the ads on Facebook have our age associated with advertisements on the right side of the page?
Facebook age is associated with ads from the time you sign up with your date of birth. Even though you have it hidden or only partially there, that statistic is used by Facebook to target ads when you view your pages.
Great tips! Thanks.
