Learn the techniques I used to make over $4,000,000 in affiliate commissions! Check out my Free Affiliate Marketing Guide and learn the "how to" for Facebook Ads, PPC Affiliate Marketing, PPV / CPV Affiliate Marketing, And Media Buying!

Did you know that 40% of people given a profitable successful campaign still wouldn't do anything with it?

Well... I just made that number up but it's to make a point. I wonder how close to truth it is. I'd actually estimate closer to 60% (for those who know nothing about affiliate marketing).

The biggest battle in affiliate marketing and business in general is getting past that first hump... Starting.

I'll be the first to say that it really does get easier as time goes. The more I do affiliate marketing, the easier it become to me and I like that. But just like everyone else, when I first started trying to make money online I was in that rough spot where I was too "busy" to try new things, apply myself to something that was not instant, etc.

When you are ready to start in affiliate marketing, apply yourself to it and it will get easier as you learn.

When is the best time to start?

The best time to start is now. I always smile when people say they plan on trying affiliate marketing in a few months. I smile because I doubt they will do anything with it. This is simply because someone REALLY wanting to try something will do something about it... right now.

Excuses
Don't allow yourself to fall into the common excuses that people give of why they cannot start affiliate marketing.

Here are some common excuses:

  • Money - Look in previous posts or on google and you can find coupons for PPC programs which will allow you to experiment as you save.
  • Time - Nobody understands how busy you are. News flash: everyone is busy. This is a busy society. The thing is, people consider watching tv for 3 hours at night yet say they're too busy to start affiliate marketing. If it's a priority, you'll make time.
  • Knowledge - Read this blog, read the blogs in my blog roll, read digitalpoint forums, consider joining PPC Coach or Click Consultants.
  • Fear - Don't be scared! Google isn't going to kill you for making a campaign with all Poor quality scores. Start over, try again.

So all that to say, start now! If you are thinking of a place to join, you might consider AzoogleAds, MarketLeverage, or CX Digital.

Yep, pretty much all of those excuses are ones I’ve said to myself. The one that gets me the most is the “no money” one. I’ve used free coupons in the past and did some basic test but they run out fast and you can only use them once (right?). My main problem is almost all of my monthly revenue goes right to paying regular living bills (rent, insurance…) and I don’t have much at all left to re-invest and use to make more. I basically end up depending on selling a site here and there to get a bit of extra cash to use for campaigns.

I just wish I had a few grand to really get going that I could use to re-invest and build upon and keep it away from bills lol. But for now I have to do it a little at a time :/.

…though I am definitely open to good ideas to make my excuse just that, a silly excuse, lol. Any tips to get a nice bankroll going that will help keep campaigns going? I only have one credit card with a low $500 limit so that is about the set limit I have right now.

  2. Starting is the hardest step, whether its out of fear or laziness. With the economy in a recession and the low cost of web startups the best time to start is now.

plan on trying affiliate marketing in a few months ;)

  4. [...] This is an easy one, many people say they want to work from home doing affiliate marketing but do they take any action? You’ve read hundreds of ebooks, posts, blogs, etc… but have you tried to follow just one of them? To get experience you have to jump in the game. Jonathan write an interesting post on how Starting is your biggest battle. [...]

    Hi everyone,
I really want to start in affiliate marketing, have some $$$ and I’ve been reading several blogs for a couple months now. What is holding me back right now is that I’m not sure which affiliate networks will take me in (I’m a total newbie). Any advise on this? Jonathan?

  6. TipJar says:

Wow, it’s weird that you just posted this. Because I’ve been considering jumping into affiliate marketing for the past couple months but always came up with an excuse. I still have some lame excuses…but starting after school ends I’m doing it. July 1st.

See, my problem is that I don’t have any real startup money….and I just read Tyler Cruz’s case study and watched him put $1000 in the drain. Then again, I’ve read Paul’s blog (uberaffiliate) and watched him give a tour of his house–total inspiration. I’d love to quit this crappy job I work and truly make something of myself.

So my first question is this: 1. How much is good startup money if you’re a complete newb and never have dabbled with AdCenter, YSM, or AdWords? Or never even ran a campaign. I’m currently part of 1 affiliate network and have no idea how to run this thing. I’ve been reading about it for months and have been too afraid to just do it. Those free coupons though, they basically give you nothing. I currently have $500-$1000 to play around with, but I can’t afford to lose it.

Secondly, have any idea of the failure rate in this industry? How many people try it and fail miserably? End up losing tons of money? My mom is already p*ssed at me for even thinking about starting this project and I don’t wanna let my family down. I also have college bills to pay. I can’t even imagine the prospect of becoming a “super affiliate”, it would literally change my whole life.

Congrats to you and what you’ve done and made of yourself.

Yup the time when we are starting to get more serious about being an affiliate marketing is really looks hard in the beginning don’t holding back just let it go , The time that will show it , and remember what a wiseman says Time Is Money my friend , so lets start it now today !
    Thanks :)

Yeah procrastination is a killer. I often get told by my AMs that offer #X is a great offer, and I should be running it, but I will just say “Yeah I’ll look at it”, write it in my to-do list, and leave it at that.

I think its all about Speed of Implementation, a core principle preached by Eben Pagan as well. The shorter the time between hearing something and doing something, the better the results often are.

Both PPC Coach and Click Consultants are shits! I read many bad report about it. Take care!

  10. daaan says:

Yeh, i have lot of idea to join with affiliates marketing but until now i never start one of them lol

  11. Dave says:

Do you think its a good idea to use your main domain for affiliate offers? I have an established domain and would like to set up some affiliate landing pages, but I’m worried users may navigate away to the actual site.

    Starting is the hardest step.

  13. Wesley says:

This is indeed what has been holding me back for a looong time.

Btw, why are you linking to click consultants? Isn’t that site dead?

  14. Jay says:

Man, my biggest problem isn’t starting but rather procrastinating lol! It sucks because I tend to not finish crap… or sometimes I’m caught up with so many projects I lose focus.

    Damn this MMO stuff! lol!

    Jay

  15. EntreBlast says:

That’s what I was like. Delaying and delaying. But this month I’ve finally decided to start.

  16. A lot of people don;t like starting because they don’t see profits right away

  17. This is the main problem with me; unlike others, I finish what I start most of the time (yes, most.). However, the problem I have is that I never actually get started. I’m always over-analyzing.
