Google Releases Web Browser Called Chrome

Monday, Sep 1st, 2008 by Jonathan Volk

Yesterday (Labor Day), Google announced that they will be releasing a new web browser called Chrome!

A little bit about Chrome:

  • You'll be able to download it sometime today (Tuesday) for Windows OS only. Currently, they're working on their Mac and Linux versions.
  • Google said Chrome will be a more sophisticated Web browser better suited for displaying the dynamic and interactive content blossoming on the Web as people migrate from television, radio and newspapers.
  • Includes a brand new JavaScript virtual machine called V8
  • Tabs wil go above the window, not below the address bar
  • Location bar will support auto-complete functions and suggests web pages you've previously visited as well as suggested sites you haven't
  • Upon launch, you'll see an Opera-like speed dial with bookmarks and thumbnails for up to web sites
  • There will be a privacy mode that allows you to surf without saving any personal history (Microsoft is building a similar feature into Internet Explorer 8)
  • The browser will constantly download up to date information about web sites with malicious code
  • Chrome will utilize Google Gears to allow you to save many web sites and applications for offline use.

As you can see, they're trying very hard to take as much market share from IE as possible... probably due to the new IE version 8 beta which will effectively reduce a fairly large percentage of Google's traffic / advertising revenue by making it more difficult to install non-Microsoft related toolbars and setting default options which will possibly cause Google's advertisements to not show.

This should prove to be pretty awesome as Google always has produced quality products so I look forward to downloading this new browser.

Chrome and Affiliate Marketing:

As with all big news in the internet realm, you need to think how this could affect your marketing business.

So far, I'm guessing that by having this browser, Google will be able to even better target your ads which will probably result in a better overall result for us.

Another thing to look out for is your website browser compatibility. It's very easy to remember to forget to check for a browser that you do not commonly use. I almost never check a site in IE and it's often led to reduced sales because of me forgetting to check.

Now when you build a website (or landing page), be sure to test your page out in all the major browsers including Chrome.

Other than that, it's too early to tell what exactly will change when it comes to online advertising as a result of this browser but we shall see.
