Many times in this industry it feels like as you get comfortable with how to play the game, they decide to change it up.
Well, this Saturday, adwords will be going offline for a few hours. This downtime is no doubt to change the system quality score over to a new improved scoring system.
The basics of this quality score update is that there will no longer be a "Inactive for search." Now every keyword will get traffic, although those who would normally be "inactive for search" will probably get one click a day or something crazy low.
Another huge update is the Quality score will no longer show minimum bids. Instead, they will show minimum front page bid.
This number is actually quite helpful as compared to the minimum bid. Basically you'll know exactly what you need to pay to get on the front page. Neat huh?
The last major update is that the quality score is supposedly calculated for every single search. The process is fairly complicated sounding and so I'll leave you to read about that on the google blog.

A lot of people are going to be complaining and whining about Google after Saturday. These are the times when you are glad some of your sites are organic, and don’t rely on PPC… It really allows you to ride through the inevitable ups and downs of PPC
Jonathan, always something new from Google! I have not yet made the Adsense plunge, although I have an account with Google for one hubpage that is monetized with adsense and Kontera ads. Pagerank is pretty decent, thinking of migrating one more of my blogs over to HubPages to see if a trickle of revenue can be realized. Respectfully, Nicholas
I guess we will have to wait until Saturday to see what we can complain about!
Jon, are you sure it’s this Saturday? From the blog:
“Today, we’d like to let you know of further improvements we’ll introduce in the coming weeks…”
“…Finally, please note that we’ll release these Quality Score changes to a very small segment of advertisers within the next day or two, so that we can gather feedback before launching to all our advertisers.”
The part that I like about it is the automatic Geo-Targeting for PPC campaigns. Google already does this for organic search results, so it will be nice not to worry about getting clicks on ads that are sent to a country-specific-redirect.
I believe this is a positive change for serious marketers.
Being on the first page of adwords is necessary to make big bucks and knowing how much you need to pay to be there is just cool.
Is google really scared of loosing business? cos this change really favors us.
